This collaborative project (Josh Rios and Anthony Romero) treated the invitation to exhibit in the gallery as an invitation into the institution itself, into the circumstances where various forms of knowledge are produced about art and its arrangement into a history. Essentially, the gallery is passed over in favor of the classroom—a somewhat mysterious zone not typically available for analysis—and the exhibition opening is passed over in favor of the lecture and discussion. Education is an experiential process that can destabilize notions of programmatic standardization, but only if the fabric of the institution is open to restructuring, if it can be manipulated here and there. The metaphor of the student body is extended, invoking something like a phantom limb, an invisible pedagogical extension that nevertheless feels.
